Bilaterally symmetrical animals
SUBFAMILY: Hominines
Homininae contains the more closely related gorillas, chimpanzees and humans.
It is a largely accepted belief that hominines are more closely related to each other than to orangutans, which have been classified as pongines accordingly.
This theory was only established by studies during the 1970s. However, the theory has become accepted by many since.
The split between ponginae and homininae is believed to have happened around 13 million years ago.
Hominines can be split into two tribes. These tribes are gorillini and hominini.
Gorillini contains all gorillas. However, chimpanzees have been shown to be members of hominini.
Chimpanzees are more closely related to humans, which is why they are grouped into the hominini.
Humans are part of the hominini tribe.
