Ponginae contains genera of which orangutans are the only one which is extant.

 

Pongines are believed to have first existed around 13 million years ago.

 

There are a number of genera among the pongines, all but one are extinct.

 

The extinct genera are named gigantopithecus, sivapithecus, lufengpithecus, ankarapithecus and ouranopithecus.  The extant genus is called pongo.
